Cosmas the Aetolian is especially revered in the Orthodox world because many believers see his life as marked by sacrifice, repentance, simplicity, and obedience to God rather than personal gain. That’s why his prophecies and teachings are often treated with seriousness among Orthodox Christians.
In Orthodox spirituality, humility is usually considered one of the key signs that someone is genuinely guided by the Holy Spirit. Pride, ego, manipulation, or obsession with power are often seen as opening the door to spiritual deception instead. This idea appears repeatedly in the writings of saints like Paisios of Mount Athos, Seraphim of Sarov, and John Climacus.
At the same time, Christianity also teaches caution about judging other people too absolutely. The New Testament encourages believers to “test the spirits” and examine fruits — humility, love, truthfulness, repentance — rather than relying only on dramatic claims or prophecies.
A balanced Orthodox approach is usually:
- true grace is linked with humility and repentance,
- spiritual gifts are not proof of personal superiority,
- false prophecy eventually collapses because it lacks truth,
- and discernment matters more than excitement or fear.
